Telecom Tree Helps Women’s Refuge this Christmas

Women’s Refuge says the lighting of the Telecom Tree in Wellington’s Frank Kitts Park tonight is a very special occasion for the organisation, which provides services to around 28,000 women and children each year.

“Telecom has made it possible for visitors to the tree to bring a Christmas gift for a child,” said Heather Henare, Chief Executive for the National Collective of Independent Women’s Refuges.

She said, “Women’s Refuge will distribute those gifts to families who are experiencing hardship as a result of domestic violence. Special treats and toys can make a big difference to children at Christmas and bring some welcome relief to their mums who may be having a hard time making ends meet.”

Ms Henare said, “Over the last year, Women’s Refuge helped more than 12,000 children. 34% of these were under the age of five.”

Denise Reynolds, Kaiwhakahare for the National Collective, said Telecom’s support is much appreciated.

She said, “It is very important to us that our work has been recognised in this way by Telecom. It will help us to raise awareness about family violence and also, of course, to collect gifts at a central point in Wellington.”

“Last year, the collection took place in Auckland and toys were distributed to Refuges as far north as Kaitaia. This year, with support from the Wellington City Council, the Telecom Tree will be a wonderful focal point for Christmas activities in the region and we hope the Wellington community will support us generously.”

Women’s Refuge is New Zealand’s most significant family violence organisation, with a 35 year history of providing comprehensive services for women and children.
