40 stone carvings are reaching completion as sculptors are creating their artworks in Omaru Stone last Saturday in Maidstone Park , Upper Hutt .Many have travelled from around NZ and Australia for the 9 day event that finishes with an auction on Monday 25 Jan at 1pm .Upper Hutt sculptor and artist Mary Archibald started the event 16 years ago and remarks on the development of talent over the years of returning people.The public can wander free amongst the artists who are very willing to engage in discussion about their creations.Various media are now added to the stone such as paua, metal and wood to give new dimensions to the final piece . People who have been spectators one year have returned in following years to participate . The relaxed atmosphere of the park for artists is enhanced by Pete's Place on site mobile cafe which serves "real lattes in the park ' Owner Peter Scott has made the stone carving part of his annual nationwide circuit because of its special features of artist and public interaction.
