Man Injured In Quad Bike Accident
Man Injured In Quad Bike Accident Flown By Westpac Rescue Helicopter
The Wellington-based Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called to a man injured in a quad bike accident in North Canterbury earlier this afternoon.
The helicopter, with a Wellington Free Ambulance Helicopter Paramedic arrived at the accident, in Kekerengu - midway between Blenheim and Kaikoura - just before noon.
On our arrival we found a 52 year old Kekerungu man who was injured when the bike rolled end over end about three metres down a bank.
"As we understand it the man's leg was struck by the carrier on the back of the quad bike" says Dave Greenberg, Westpac Rescue Helicopter Crewman. "He was quite lucky not to be more seriously injured after the bike rolled a couple of times and then threw him clear".
The man suffered a compound fracture to his lower leg and was being cared for by family members and a local district nurse.
A Kaikoura based ambulance crew arrived at the scene and assisted with stabilising the mans injured leg and getting him ready for transport.
The man was flown to Wairau Hospital in Blenheim. He is currently being treated in the Emergency Department and is expected to undergo surgery for the fractured leg later today.
