NZ Transport Agency expands webcam service

NZ Transport Agency expands webcam service for travellers

The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) is expanding its traffic information service for drivers by increasing the number of webcams on State Highway 1 to give people more detailed information about highway conditions before they travel.

The fixed web cameras have been installed at key locations around the country to provide a real time snapshot of traffic to the public via the NZTA website. The images can also be used by third parties to develop services for applications such as mobile phones to provide more options of making information available to road users.

The latest additions are at:
1. Otaki – view looking at SH1 Otaki to Otaki Roundabout. The direction of view may change during peak times to show traffic.
2. Waiouru – view is on the approach to Waiouru, facing north towards Waiouru.
3. Paremata ¬– Paremata roundabout. The direction of view may change during peak times to show traffic.

The Otaki and Waiouru cameras will be available for use from Friday 12 March, while the Paremata camera should be available online within the next fortnight.

The camera images which automatically refresh every 60 seconds, can be viewed on the NZTA’s traffic website http://www.nzta.govt.nz/traffic/current-conditions/webcams/index.html or for third party developers on the NZTA’s InfoConnect website https://infoconnect.highwaysinfo.govt.nz

“The extra cameras will allow people to make their own decisions about when they should travel,” said the NZTA’s Regional Director Jenny Chetwynd. “The online pictures give people the opportunity to view real time conditions, avoid congestion, and to have smoother and safer journeys.”

Webcams also operate in Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.
