Worldwide Model for Philanthropy comes to
Nelson
The people of Nelson and Tasman are about to benefit from the launch of the first Community Foundation for this region – Nelson Bays Community Foundation.
There are over 1400 Community Foundations around the world each dedicated to inspire generosity and encourage people to contribute to the betterment of their region and its people. The Warehouse creator, Sir Stephen Tindall has already supported the establishment of 12 Community Foundations in New Zealand through the Tindall Foundation. The Tindall Foundation supports local foundations to encourage philanthrophy in their communities
The Nelson Bays Community Foundation aims to attract philanthropic people who wish to donate or bequeath funds that can then be distributed, through an application system, to local charities. Benefactors can stipulate who they’d like funds to go through if they wish and even have named funds within the Foundation umbrella.
The Board of Trustees is John Rollston (Chairman), David Kerr, Aldo Miccio, Judene Edgar, Jeremy Barton, Gillian Williams OBE, Sharon McGuire and Pip Jamieson.
Community Founda¬tions are established to endure forever. The key principle is to protect the capital base while distributing earnings to meet community needs. The structure ensures consideration of the community’s changing needs while achieving donor’s wishes.
“It’s all about the promotion and encouragement of generosity for the betterment of our community,” says John Rollston.
He says Nelson Bays Community Foundation operates to complement and support other charitable organisations in the Nelson Bays region.
The Nelson Bays Community Foundation is launching on March 30th, 2010 with an invitation event at WOW. Stephen Tindall will be a guest speaker at the launch.
