Visitors steam into Thames for fun weekend
Modellers from all over North Island to bring ride-on trains to Thames for open weekend
Littlies, grandparents, and ride-on model train fans around the Coromandel Peninsula are in for a treat next weekend when all kinds of ride-on model trains arrive in Thames from all over the country.
Thames Small Gauge Railway (TSGR) will host the guests and members of the public at their custom-built Station on Thames' Brown Street, just up the road from Goldfield's Mall, on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 May.
Steam trains, petrol trains, hydraulic trains and electric trains will stream into Thames from as far afield as Napier, Hastings, Palmerstone North, Auckland, Whangarei, Hamilton and Rotorua, giving locals the chance to look and ride.
TSGR president, Tony Smith, says "mums, dads, grandparents and families of all ages are welcome to come and enjoy. Who knows, they might even want to get involved."
While younger ones usually just enjoy riding the trains, teens, petrol-heads, steam buffs and electrical enthusiasts will be fascinated with the craftsmanship and engineering - and find modellers open and willing to share ideas.
