“Magic Button” Trade Me Auction Surpasses 10,000

Media Release 30 May 2010
“Magic Button” Trade Me Auction Surpasses 10,000 Hits

A “magic button” being auctioned on Trade Me has attracted the attention of thousands of Kiwi’s.

The Malvern Scout Group in Christchurch is auctioning the rare button to raise money towards their Scout Jamboree at Mystery Creek Hamilton this Christmas. They need more than $30,000 to get themselves and their gear up north.
Jo Downey, one of the scout mums, came up with the story and together with Mike Foubister, a scout dad and leader, has developed the auction and got it going on Trade Me.

“We have been blown away by the attention the auction is getting,” says Jo. “The number of questions being asked each day means I am having to update all the time and the story of the Magic Button is developing into quite a tale!”
Many are returning to the auction to see what other wonderful historic moments the button has been directly involved with.

So far the button has been linked to explorer Captain Oates, the little boy who plugged the dyke (with the button NOT his finger as legend has suggested), being on Captain Cook’s great coat when he sighted Nicks Head for the first time and even tucked into Neil Armstrong’s boot when he made one small step for mankind.

“There are 27 boys and girls who hope to attend the Jamboree and have a 10 day experience of a lifetime so we are doing our up-most best to raise the funds,” says Jo Downey.
