Review Wellington City Council’s Parking Regime
Review City Council’s Parking Regime; Give The Public A Say.
Lambton Ward candidate John Bishop is calling for a review of the Wellington City Council’s parking policies – and he wants public input about the behaviour of the parking wardens.
“I don’t blame the wardens myself, “ Mr Bishop said. “They are given incentives like iPods and trips to Sydney to issue as many tickets as possible, and their employer,Parkwise, gets a fee every time a warden successfully issues a ticket.
No wonder the wardens are so tough, he said.
“An orderly turnover of parking spaces is in everyone’s interest, but there is a difference between proper enforcement and overzealous enforcement.”
“As a candidate for the city council, I am campaigning for a review. Specifically I want the public to tell the council their stories, and for councillors to hear about how the policies they have set out are working in practice.
“I am making my stance clear in a series of radio advertisements which are running this week (beginning Monday 9 August).
“We can change the practices by changing the incentives, but to do that voters need to elect councillors who will support a review, hear public input and act upon it. That’s the democratic way,” Mr Bishop said.
