Jane Coughlan contesting Timaru Mayoralty
Timaru District Councillor Jane Coughlan is to stand for the Mayoralty in the local body elections for 2010.
Jane’s extensive local government experience as a sixth-term councillor, her previous roles as a chairperson of Council Committees and her professional background see her well-placed to take on the Mayoralty.
“I think we need to be mindful of the times we are in. I have grave concerns for our rate payers on fixed incomes with increasing rate demands in a recession,” she said.
Jane believes that the projects currently underway need to be completed, but that the Council must be aware of where it is heading in the future.
“The Caroline Bay development has been achieved, the Maori Rock Art is pending, but we still lack the ability to attract the business conference market and tourism,” she said.
Jane chaired the advisory group for Inner City Revitalisation and now wants to ensure further development takes place which is sympathetic to the heritage fabric of the inner city.
“I see ongoing planning as a priority for Timaru,” she said.
“I am prepared to listen to our rate payers, chair open meetings, recognise the contribution of all councillors, and lead.”
Jane is standing again for Council and is looking at the Mayoral role as a great challenge.
Jane is married to Tom, has four adult children, is a grandmother, a former farmer’s wife and a Pharmacist.
