*Banks Introduces Consumer Choice into Water Policy Debate *

Auckland Mayor John Banks says the new Auckland Council represents an excellent opportunity for a fresh start on water and wastewater pricing.

“I have a visionary policy for water that will give Aucklanders choice on how they are billed and flexibility in case their needs change.

“Water and wastewater pricing for metropolitan Auckland should be fair, inexpensive and tailored to the needs of different users."

Mayor Banks says drinking water will continue to be charged on a volumetric or pay as you go basis but that he is offering a new start on wastewater charges from 2012.

Banks proposes a number of plans that include fixed and volumetric charges or a blend of both.

“For the first time Aucklanders will have a choice on the basis that they pay for wastewater.

“If you can buy your electricity and mobile phone minutes on a plan that best suits your needs, you should be able to do the same with wastewater.”

Mayor Banks says this will help keep charges low, reward conservation and promote sustainability. He says he does not intend to continue with the Metrowater policy.

“The new Council offers an opportunity to embrace best practice rather than the old way of doing things. One size does not fit all.”

Mayor Banks will require that Watercare pass on to water users the substantial savings that were identified by the Royal Commission from the amalgamation of the region’s water and wastewater assets.
