Bring Bugs and Butterflies into your own Backyard

MEDIA RELEASE

Tuesday 21 September 2010

Bring Bugs and Butterflies into your own Backyard with Butterfly Creek!

Spring is here and it’s the perfect time to start thinking about getting back in the garden with the kids, especially in the school holidays!

A great way to get them interested in gardening is to plant your own Butterfly Garden, choosing plants that our native butterflies will lay their eggs on so the hatched caterpillars can eat well and flowers with lots of nectar for the butterflies once they emerge from their cocoons.

There are lots of other tricks to keep the butterflies in your garden and visitors to Butterfly Creek during the coming school holidays will get the chance to learn a few top tips, with workshops from our resident bug expert at 10.30am each day.

The other great thing about spring is all the mega-cute little babies that are bouncing and waddling around Buttermilk Farm. With lambs, ducklings, goslings and baby bunnies…. you’ll have a hard time dragging the kids out of there!

Butterfly Creek offers a range of all-weather experiences for children and adults alike.  Other attractions include our huge Aussie Saltwater crocs, Greenfingers Bugs About Exhibit with New Zealand’s largest collection of tarantula and the endangered Giant Weta (wetapunga), baby alligators, the Tropical Butterfly House, New Zealand’s largest fresh water and tropical marine aquaria and a great farm animal petting zoo – not forgetting of course the Tip Top Red Admiral Express Train, café and playground.

This programme runs in the school holidays, 9.30am – 3.30pm and with spaces limited to 4 per group, it is guaranteed to sell out fast. Cost is $105 per child, includes a light lunch and is suitable for ages 7 – 12yrs. Younger children can be catered for if accompanied by an adult
