Insulation fire risk after
earthquake
Community Energy Action Charitable Trust is warning homeowners of the possible fire risk of insulation after the earthquake. Ceiling insulation that has shifted too close to downlights or flues may ignite, causing a fire.
“Insulation is obviously a very light material that can be shifted by the force of a 7.1 earthquake,” explains Bede Martin, Chief Executive of Community Energy Action. “The fire service has already reported one house fire caused by insulation that was moved by the earthquake.”
The charitable trust installs insulation and heating with government subsidies for all incomes and uses surpluses to give vulnerable people on low incomes higher subsidies of up to 100% through their charitable programmes.
Anyone with questions about their insulation can ring Community Energy Action on 374 7222.
