Greatest wine “classic in the making”

Lead critic says New Zealand’s greatest wine “classic in the making”

The latest issue of the world’s most influential wine publication, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, says Te Mata Estate’s Coleraine and Awatea wines are “bona fide classics in the making.”

Describing Te Mata Estate as “one of New Zealand’s most respected wineries” the publication’s 2010 review of New Zealand wine says that Te Mata Estate “has fashioned a clutch of stunning wines in both 2008 and 2009. Both tank samples of their flagship Coleraine and Awatea 2009 are bona fide classics in the making.”

In 2008, Robert Parker’s reviewer Neal Martin named Te Mata Estate one of five outstanding New Zealand wine producers, and it’s Coleraine as “New Zealand’s greatest wine”.

Bucking the recent wine industry downturn, Te Mata Estate has enjoyed record results since the Parker pronouncement in 2008, with both New Zealand and export sales growing strongly. “Top reviews from Parker publicise your quality to those looking for the world’s best.” says Te Mata Estate’s Nicholas Buck. “Our sales have expanded into more than 30 markets since the 2008 reviews came out. These latest reviews confirm that New Zealand’s wine future lies in quality, not quantity.”

“The most powerful critic of any kind, anywhere” is how the Los Angeles Times described Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, a subscriber only newsletter established in 1978. In the global fine wine markets its reviews have the power to make or break the reputation of wines and wineries. Parker’s Wine Advocate reviews wines with scores out of 100. Scores of 90 or more are considered “outstanding”.

To date, 12 vintages of Te Mata Estate’s Coleraine have been reviewed. All of them have been declared “outstanding”.

Te Mata Estate Coleraine 2009 will be released for sale on 1 March 2011.
