Stocking Up for the Holidays

The last Food Day Appeal for the year is on Saturday 13 November, and is a great way to support the work that Downtown Community Ministry (DCM) leading up to the holiday season.

Jennifer Stewart, Communications and Events Coordinator for DCM, says “The holiday season should be full of happiness, but for our service users it can be a time of extra stress as they struggle to feed themselves and their families”.

“Hopefully this appeal will be even more successful than May’s appeal and will provide us with enough food to last into the New Year”.

The items most needed are staple food items such as tinned fish or meat, breakfast spreads, tinned fruit, sugar, tea bags, noodles, snack foods and packet meals.

DCM Outreach Worker David Manuelsays, “Some people really rely on us for food every week, even during the holidays. The emphasis for this appeal is on good basic nutritional food.  There is a tendency at this time of year for people to donate lots of treats. For people with high health needs, like diabetes, accessing healthy food is the best support.”

DCM volunteers will be at four New Worldsupermarkets in the city – Newtown, Chaffers, Metro on Willis Streetand Metro at the Railway Station – from 9 amon Saturday to collect food and donations from the community.  Donations are also accepted online via our website, or in person at our office in Lukes Lane.

This is the second of two Food Day Appeals for 2010, to increase foodbank supplies and to raise community awareness of the need for donations and ongoing support.  The appeal is part of the Wellington Coalition of Foodbanks Food Appeals, supported by Newstalk ZB.
