Rotorua District Youth Council for 2011 selected

ROTORUA 23.11.10: Seventeen young people, representing six ethnicities and eight local schools, have been selected to serve on the 2011 Rotorua District Youth Council (RDYC).

Rotorua District Council youth projects officer Jill Campbell says there is a big year ahead for the youth council with leadership training, Ministry of Youth Development’s youth participation programme, learning about local government, making submissions to central government, event organisation, and helping to administer funding, all on the agenda.

“There are lots of community events and projects for our youth councillors to be involved in and to be challenged by, and I’m sure each member will gain a lot of satisfaction from being a part of it all.”

Mrs Campbell says the diversity of the new group which includes Maori, Pakeha, South African, Indian, Korean and Tongan cultures, means the young people will look at issues from a wide range of different perspectives.

The RDYC will begin their year with a comprehensive training weekend in February.

Scott McAlister, Michael Welten, Viliami Manu Taliauli, Matthew Bloomfield (all John Paul College); Kate Wright, Katheryn Pasco, Sunny Kim (Western Heights High School); Eric Roberts, Stella Grant, Dominique Werahiko (Rotorua Lakes High School); Riley Power, Benjamin Martelli (Reporoa College); Tessa Morgan, Ramari Rakuraku-Foster (Rotorua Girls' High School); Khan Aranga (Rotorua Boys' High School); Alicia Atarangi Manley (Rotorua School for Young Parents); and Savanna Goncalies (Rotorua Intermediate School).
