Nelson Opera in the Park

Nelson Opera in the Park

26 February 2011, Trafalgar Park

The line up for this year’s Nelson Opera in the Park will please not just opera lovers, but also those with a soft spot for New Zealand’s best loved comedy duo – the Topp Twins.

Musical Director Peter Rainey announced today that the operatic side of the programme would be lead by tenor Ben Makisi and lyric soprano Aivale Cole.

“I’m thrilled to have these two leading our operatic programme,” he said. “Ben is becoming known as the ‘Polynesian Pavarotti’ because of his stature, stage presence and his strong, pure voice, while Aivale, with her rich voice and imaginative interpretations, is on a fast track to stardom after winning the Lexus Song Quest in 2009.”

Rainey said hearing the Topp Twins with an orchestral backing would be a real treat for Nelson.

“They wowed the crowd earlier this year when they sang with the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra and they’re singing with the APO again with Kenny Rogers,” he said. “Hearing the Topps yodel with the Vector Wellington Orchestra will be something Nelsonians will want to tell their grandchildren about – or better still bring them along too!”

Rainey hinted that the full line up may still contain some surprises.

Nelson City Council festivals producer Sophie Kelly said there is a range of options for businesses to get involved with sponsorship for this year’s Opera in the Park, after the loss of major sponsor Bio Paints.

“We are now ready to present some exciting options to businesses for sponsorship of the production, from the big screens through to the finale,” she said. “We’re keen to hear from anyone who would like to know more about supporting this iconic community event.”

Ms Kelly said ticketing agent Everyman was helping to keep the price of the event down by waiving all booking fees.

“This equates to a significant sponsorship and is a great gesture of support from Everyman,” she said.

Nelson Opera in the Park is on 26 February 2011, at Trafalgar Park, gates open 5.30, event starts 7.30pm. Adults $15, children 5-15 $5, children U5 free.

Nelson Opera in the Park is part of Summer in Nelson, presented by the Nelson City Council as a celebration for locals and an attraction for visitors. Full programme out in early December.
