New Zealand's best bike rides revealed
Cycling is booming in New Zealand, but where are the best places to ride?
Co-author of a new book '100 Classic Road Rides', Jonathan Kennett says bicycles now outsell cars in New Zealand.
“More than 1.3 million New Zealanders ride bikes, and we've put this book together to answer the question: where shall I ride today?”
Mr Kennett says recent crashes are distressing news, but that cycling is as safe as many daily activities such as driving and DIY – and has many health benefits.
BikeNZ CEO Kieran Turner and cycling author Jonathan Kennett have teamed up to write the comprehensive guide to the best 100 road rides in New Zealand.
Mr Kennett says, “'100 Classic Road Rides' provides everything you need to choose a trip that best suits your favoured style of riding.”
“The hills, the flats, the scenery, quiet roads to aim for and traffic hot spots to avoid – if it’s important, you’ll find the details here.”
Detailed ride descriptions, maps and altitude graphs are provided for three or four classic rides within each region. The authors have included Tour de France climb categories, information on traffic volumes, as well as café stops along the ride.
Cycling legend Sarah Ulmer says the authors worked with local riders to uncover New Zealand's best rides.
“This book will help you find the hidden gems as well as the most popular rides that have been highly recommended by local riders in each region.”
Mr Kennett says 'Classic New Zealand Road Rides' is available from bike shops and bookstores, or can be purchased online at www.kennett.co.nz for a recommended retail price of $39.90.
