Pike River Welcomes Capping
Media statement from Pike River Coal Limited CEO Peter Whittall
Pike River Coal Limited CEO Peter Whittall has today welcomed the news the ventilation shaft has been capped.
“It is a significant step forward in the process towards stabilising the mine and recovering our men.”
Mr Whittall says the next significant step will be the arrival of the Floxal nitrogen-generation unit which has been on stand-by in Australia now for several days.
The Floxal will pump nitrogen into the mine to maintain an inert environment and reduce the temperature. This will allow engineers the opportunity to deliver over-due maintenance (standard procedure is for this to occur every 25 hours of operation) to the GAG engine which has been operating continuously for 11 days.
“The sooner the Floxal is installed the sooner the conditions in the mine will stabilise” says Peter Whittall.
