Crayfish Poachers Must be Prosecuted
In response to the incident which occurred on the afternoon of 16 December in Tokomaru Bay off the North Island’s east coast, where a Ministry patrol boat was rammed by a commercial fishing vessel while retrieving illegally set crayfish pots, the NZSPES calls for a full prosecution.
Crayfish poachers cannot be tolerated, and they should receive the full brunt of the law. NZSPES calls on the Police to do a full investigation into the incident. We also call on the Ministry of Fisheries to destroy the commercial crayfish vessel along with all of its gear.
The NZSPES commends the crew of Te Tiaki for their brave work in the protection of the Crayfish.
