Canterbury Earthquakes Continue

This is a Civil Defence announcement issued by the Canterbury Regional Civil Defence Emergency Management.

Due to this morning’s significant aftershock, Canterbury Regional Civil Defence Emergency Management is monitoring the situation from the Emergency Co-Ordination Centre in conjunction with emergency services. Christchurch City Council Civil Defence is managing the response.

Some buildings in the central city have been damaged and evacuations have occurred where necessary. Power was out in some areas of the city immediately following the aftershock but has been restored in most areas.

Residents are advised to check their buildings for damage. If significant damage appears to have occurred, contact their building services provider or structural engineer before recommencing use of the building. City Council assessors may be available is necessary.

Residents are also advised to contact emergency services only if necessary, follow directions of emergency services, and listen to the radio and media services for further advice and information.
