40kph speed limit a victory for commonsense

40kph speed limit a victory for commonsense

Auckland Transport’s decision to slow re-routed buses to 40kms per hour through a quiet Mission Bay street is a victory for commonsense and shows the new and gigantic council-controlled organisation is listening to the little people, says the Auckland Councillor for Orakei, Cameron Brewer.

“I’ve had dozens of emails from Nihill Crescent residents upset all the bus services have been diverted through their quiet suburban street due to the month-long road works on Kepa Road. Residents have been very concerned at the number and speed of buses, particularly at the top of the street where it gets windy and narrow. With dozens of 40-seater Eastern Bays buses now tearing through Nihill Crescent, residents are really concerned about safety, particularly of children.”

Auckland Transport remains committed to its temporary bus route diversion. However one key improvement has today been made.

“I suggested to Auckland Transport that at the very least bus drivers be asked to slow to 40kms per hour. That suggestion was put to the bus operators and subsequently from today drivers will now adhere to a top speed of 40kph for Nihill Crescent. This is a victory for common sense and shows despite the size and power of the new Auckland Transport CCO, it can listen and positively respond.”

Mr Brewer says as the local councillor he is keen to hear residents and motorists’ ongoing feedback around the Kepa Road and Quay Street road works.
