Honda Flag Flys High at NZ Supercross Final
Over the weekend (January 15/16) the Final round of the Backflip New Zealand Supercross Championships where staged, just outside Timaru.
On Friday the South Canterbury Motorcycle Club also ran the second round of the South Island Supercross Championships giving everyone more track time at the newly developed circuit. The Honda flag flew high with Christchurch’s Justin McDonald bring his Timaru Honda CRF450R home second behind former World MX GP star Josh Coppins in the Open Class while young Craig Smith took out the Senior Lites title on his Timaru Honda CRF250R.
The crowd had been light on the Friday, but come Saturday with the New Zealand Supercross Titles up for grabs, the locals turned out to support their lads and a large crowd packed onto the truck decks which surround the track.
McDonald set about reducing Coppins 10 point lead by taking the win in race one, but the ex World No2’s experience showed through and he took out the next two races and the Championship, with McDonald finishing second. Rotorua’s Michael Phillips had a great day finishing fourth overall in the Championships
Honda’s raising star 17-year-old Craig Smith from Christchurch, consolidated his extensive points lead in the Senior Lites class, taking the win in the New Zealand Championship on his Timaru Honda CRF250R.
Tauranga’s Peter Broxholme missed the South Island Champs because of his commitment to Whangamata Honda’s Kids Camp, which made his defence of his second place in the Championship that much harder against Taupo’s Nick Saunders, who held Broxholme at bay all day, dropping him to third overall.
Honda’s Dealer Team riders now look to the upcoming New Zealand Motocross Championships
