Turfs up for Forsyth Barr Stadium

Turfs up for Forsyth Barr Stadium

Forsyth Barr Stadium is boasting a healthy shade of green following the successful initial establishment of the turf.

Over recent weeks, construction of the 300mm pitch has been completed with the final stage, the seeding, finished last week and growth appearing within seven days, as expected. With over 16 km of irrigation pipe, 2.2km of drainage and three varieties of ryegrass planted, the completion of the pitch marks a significant project milestone.

The natural grass under the fixed permanent roof is a first for Stadium’s worldwide and the successful grass grow-in is the result of many years of hard work and research.

Malcolm Farry, Chairman of the Carisbrook Stadium Charitable Trust, commented “Scientists and turf experts from around the world have dedicated a huge amount of time perfecting the exact conditions and sun strike levels required to grow grass under the ETFE roof. The pitch composition and Stadium site has been designed specifically for the conditions particular to the unique environment and we are now seeing the outcome of a very thorough and well planned process.

“There is no doubt that this is a hugely exciting and visual milestone in the project. The growth of the natural turf is a unique feature to Forsyth Barr Stadium and with the addition of Desso Grassmaster, due to be integrated into the pitch in April, the Stadium is in a strong position to deliver a true multi-purpose venue for the city.”
