The Spire Queenstown launches new bar with classic twist
With a chic sophisticated décor and a contemporary twist of some classics, the new owners of boutique hotel business The Spire Queenstown are re-launching the property’s intimate bar.
The bar has been re-branded N° 5 Church Lane, a reference to the hotel’s street address and in homage to renowned perfume and fashion label Chanel N° 5.
New Zealand sisters Lucy and Amelia Gain took over ownership of the multi-award-winning 10-room The Spire in mid-December 2010.
And following a busy Christmas and New Year, they have been hard at work giving the hotel bar a new lease of life with a stunning cocktail list custom-designed by champion ‘mixologist’ Jason Clark, known as JC. A superb wine list has been compiled by award-winning sommelier and wine tutor Paul Tudgay of Queenstown Resort College and the bar also offers an exhilarating modern Thai fusion tapas bar menu created by Pieak (full name Saranalong Jaipong) formerly of Chinwag in Christchurch.
A special event for locals and friends last Friday (Feb 4) officially launched the bar to the local nightlife scene.
“JC is a cocktail champion who attracts an impressive following wherever he goes, so we’re delighted to have him launching N° 5 Church Lane and putting his very special touches to the new cocktail list,” said Lucy Gain.
“He’s highly skilled and enthusiastic and using his real flair has added some unusual touches to rework some classics and introduce new taste sensations. The cocktail list has been thoughtfully designed to both respect the past and encompass the future in order to define the best of both worlds.
“Every item in the bar from the spirits to the shakers, cigars to the glassware has been carefully picked to enhance our guests’ experience.”
Some of Lucy’s favorites from the N° 5 Church Lane cocktail menu include the Prescription Julep served in a traditional Kentucky Julep Cup, the Ramos Gin Fizz, a luscious and fluffy alcoholic milkshake competition winner from 1888 and the Stolen Cobbler, made up of New Zealand’s own Stolen rum.
“Stolen rum’s the brainchild of two young New Zealand entrepreneurs with a taste for quality rum. Having toured the Caribbean extensively they managed to get their hands on some premium Trinidadian rum stocks which they brought back into New Zealand. After great reviews from friends they decided to have their own blend created, so they added premium NZ water and Stolen rum was born,” said Lucy.
"It’s available in premium bars throughout New Zealand for the discerning cocktail drinker and at N° 5 Church Lane straight from the well.
“Each and every cocktail has a story, which makes them fun and interesting as well as delicious.”
It has a premium spirit selection, boutique New Zealand beers, an extensive wine list and a premium cigar range.
