Magazine Awards cast a Wide Net

Magazine Awards cast a Wide Net

Entries for The Magazine Awards 2011 are now open, and interest is high.
Since 2009 the numbers of entrants have increased each year; competition organisers The Magazine Publishers Association (MPA) expect to again attract a wide range of entrants from across the country. Entry forms are available from the new-look website of the MPA, www.mpa.org.nz

A new award ‘Most Effective use of Magazines by an Advertiser’ recognises advertisers who demonstrate a great return on investment from successful campaigns in magazines published by MPA members. This award allows entries to be made directly by the companies who advertise in magazines. Alternatively, MPA publishers may enter this award on behalf of their advertiser.

For the awards Journalist of the Year and Columnist of the Year, writers can enter as individuals without the endorsement of one publisher, enabling the many freelancers and writers who are contributing to a number of magazines to enter. The only condition is that their submission uses articles from titles published by MPA members.

A variety of awards are offered to showcase the best of all aspects of magazine publishing in New Zealand, from design and editorial, to advertising and marketing achievements, to overall commercial success. New awards for this competition also include:

‘Best Integration of Print & Other Media’ – this recognises that publishers are using a range of media to build community engagement with their titles, and enhance readers’ experiences.

‘Best Subscriptions Promotion for a Single Title’ – recognising a growing area of magazine circulation.

Some of the most heavily entered awards will be divided into 10 categories, reflecting the breadth of audiences catered for by magazines, and the different business models of those magazines.

New sponsors this year are Actionmail, Adstream, Isubscribe, Getty Images, Media Monitors, and Snapper Media, all of whom see New Zealand’s magazine industry as a key part of their business. The magazine industry also receives year-round support from NZPost, GEON Group, PMP Limited, Image Centre Group, and the Nielsen Company.

The Awards have been run since 1996 by the MPA, who represent publishers of nearly 90% of the volume of mainstream titles published in New Zealand, including top consumer, business and special interest titles.

The Awards presentation dinner is Thursday 23rd June at the newly-christened Pullman Hotel in Auckland. MPA last held an Awards dinner there in 2007, when it was named the Hyatt.
