Samaritans still here to Help Earthquake Victims

Samaritans NZ extended its 0800 number coverage to help those in need of a listening ear after the September Christchurch earthquake. This extension is still in place and the number to call is 0800 726 666.

"We never envisaged that there would be another massive earthquake and we just want to make sure that everyone knows that we are still here to help,” says Bruce Wall, chairman of Samaritans NZ.

Samaritans would like people to know that they are there to listen and help people talk through whatever’s troubling them after this devastating event, be it big or small.

“Don’t bottle it up. We are here to offer compassion and understanding, 24/7,” says Bruce. “So even if someone needs to call us during the night when other services may not be available we are there to offer support and encouragement."

As a non-religious charitable organisation, Samaritans provides a 24 hour, 7 day a week, confidential, non-judgemental listening service for anyone suffering the after effects of this second devastating earthquake and its after shocks.

“Our thoughts are with everyone in Christchurch at the moment,” says Bruce “and we would encourage them to not be afraid to ask for help and to call us if they need to.”

Samaritans has 6 centres throughout New Zealand in Wellington, Hutt Valley, Horowhenua, Manawatu, Wanganui and Rotorua. Fully trained volunteers operate their “listening and caring” helpline.
