A Crew Members Voyage To Christchurch

Young Hokule’ A Crew Members Voyage To Christchurch To Provide Earthquake Relief

A group of Hawai’i voyagers are headed to Christchurch to provide much-needed assistance to those coping with the effects of the tragic February 22 earthquake.

Six members of Polynesian Voyaging Society’s Kapu Na Keiki program, Moani Hemuli, Haunani Kane, Waimea McKeague and Jason Patterson of Oahu; Cliff Kapono of Hawai’ i Island; and Niegel Rozet of Maui, arrive today (6 March).

The team is comprised of voyaging navigators and apprentices, trained first responders, and a journalist. Working with their hosts, Ngāi Tahu, they will join the disaster relief efforts underway throughout the city.

“We believe this is the best way to express solidarity with our Polynesian ‘ohana (family) during this painful time,” said Haunani Kane, spokesperson for Kapu Na Keiki.

“While this particular voyage will substitute a sailing canoe for jet transportation, it requires the same level of planning and preparation. We will be self-sufficient upon arrival and throughout our stay to ensure we lighten the burden of our hosts.”

Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu kaiwhakahaere Mark Solomon said Ngai Tahu were grateful that the Polynesian family from across the ocean felt they needed to come and help with Christchurch’s recovery. “It shows the level of connection between iwi Māori and our Pacific cousins.”

With limited time for planning and preparation, Kapu Na Keiki quickly fundraised $20,000 to ensure the group could travel and support themselves.

They are being welcomed by Ngāi Tahu iwi members to Christchurch at a powhiri at Rehua Marae today (March 6).
