Visiting Indian artist to put Wellington in the picture
Renowned Indian water colourist Swaroop Mukerji is the latest in a series of artists from Asia to take up residence at the historic Bolton Street Cottage under the Wellington Asia Residency Exchange (WARE) programme.
WARE was set up in 2007 and is administered by Wellington City Council City Arts in partnership with the Asia New Zealand Foundation ( www.asianz.org.nz).
WARE artists are encouraged to engage with fellow artists and the community while they are in Wellington. Swaroop Mukerjii will spend three weeks painting members of Wellington's Indian community in their home or work surroundings.
The aim of the WARE programme is to facilitate artists exchanges with the Asian region while developing Wellington's international creative identity in Asia.
Mr Mukerji's resulting works from his time in Wellington will be displayed in October at the Diwali Festival of lights.
A self-taught artist who gave up a corporate career to pursued his passion, Mr Mukerji has exhibited around India and overseas. He is based in Kolkata.
