Howick holds the key to unlocking the potential business growth of Auckland
Auckland Council must encourage further development and investment in the city.
Auckland must be economically successful to progress. Already, a high number of the country’s high-growth industries are in Auckland, and its labour productivity is 45% higher than elsewhere. However we need to work smarter to ensure that the value of output per person in Auckland rises to at least the level of Melbourne or Brisbane.
The Howick Ward is a strategic growth area for Auckland with substantial business land in both the Cascades Road area and the Greater East Tamaki Business Area (GETBA) which includes the new Highbrook Industrial Park.
The GETBA area alone contributes 30,000 jobs and some $3 billion annually to the wealth of this region and New Zealand. The recent announcement of the development of the next stage in the expansion of Highbrook entails substantial investment by the developer, and will eventually offer employment opportunities to more than 10,000 people.
Maggie Burrill, Auckland Council candidate says Auckland needs more developments like this and to develop a business friendly attitude to help establish new industries and employment.” “ We need to ensure that there is a continuous stream of work available so that when projects that bring a team of specialist workers together is completed, they have a new project to move to.
“This is particularly important for our universities and technical entities. Most of us need to continue training and development throughout our lives.
“One only has to look at the success of the Invercargill Council’s offer of FREE tertiary education for those prepared to move there to complete their education to be aware of the difference to that city.
“It was a new way of thinking, which brought considerable numbers of youth and their incomes to the south. “Let’s aim for a greater business excellence as well as artistic and sporting excellence for the benefit of the community and our growth as an economic powerhouse, “ says Maggie Burrill.
