Rugby fever “kicks off” at Remarkables Primary School

The 302 children at Remarkables Primary School will benefit from new rugby posts this winter thanks to a generous grant from First Sovereign Trust and funds raised by the Remarkables Parents Association (RPA).

Rugby fever and trans-tasman rivalries were high on Friday 20 May when the new posts were officially “kicked off” by school parents and rugby greats, former Highlander and Wakatipu Premiers Coach Kelvin Middleton, former All Black and new Queenstown resident Justin Marshall and former Wallaby Michael Brial.

The official kick off was followed by a friendly rugby kicking competition between students and parents, during which the children wore their rugby colours in order to raise funds towards the Rise Up Christchurch global telethon being held on Sunday 22 May.

School Principal, Mrs Deborah Dickson is thrilled with the new rugby posts. “The posts are a great addition to school resources and we look forward to both the students and the wider community getting a lot of use out of them, particularly with 2011 being such a big year for rugby in New Zealand,” Mrs Dickson said.

The kick off coincided with a special announcement by the RPA of a rugby themed community function and fundraiser called ‘Remarkables – Game On!’ to take place in the midst of rugby fever on Saturday 24 September.

The event, to be held in the school hall, which will be transformed in to a rugby clubrooms for the night, courtesy of HQ New Zealand. The school’s amazing facilities such as a 16 x 9 foot screen and amphitheatre, will be utilised to show New Zealand versus France live, as well as offering live music from local band ‘Groova’, and delicious food and beverage options.

Chairperson of the RPA Tracey Pedersen said that the school and RPA members are extremely excited about ‘Remarkables – Game On!’ “It’s going to be another big event for the RPA this year and we look forward to sharing our love of international rugby with the community. At only $25 per ticket, it’s a great opportunity for social groups, sports clubs, businesses, friends and families to get together to enjoy the school’s amazing facilities and to celebrate all things rugby! What a fantastic way to launch both the rugby posts and our event with the help of Kelvin, Justin and Michael. Perhaps it is a preview of the big final?” Mrs Pedersen said.

All members of the community are welcome to attend ‘Remarkables – Game On!’ on 24 September. All funds raised on the night will go back to Remarkables Primary School to purchase further resources for the library and information centre.
