Downtown Cinemas to Open in Coastlands
Work has started on the cinema complex at Coastlands set to reopen in early September with a new cinema operator, four redesigned theatres - including a 3-D theatre - and the latest digital projection technology, providing crystal clear picture and sound quality.
The Downtown Cinemas complex will contain three theatres each seating around a100 patrons with the fourth, a 3-D theatre, seating 140 patrons. One of the 100-seat theatres will be a dedicated Cinema Gold screen, offering a quality, art-house cinema experience.
Downtown Cinemas is owned by Cinema Holdings, the country’s fourth largest theatre chain, which operates cinemas under the Downtown, Cinema Gold and Paramount brands. Cinema Holdings, through Downtown Cinemas, has 21 years of experience in cinema management and was the first company in New Zealand to build a multiplex cinema development.
Cinema Holdings owns and operates: the three-screen Paramount Theatre in Wellington; the eight-screen Downtown Cinema multiplex and two-screen Cinema Gold in Palmerston North’s Downtown Shopping Centre; and three-screen Cinema Gold in Havelock North.
Cinema Holdings chief executive officer, Paul Wood, said he was thrilled that building consent was finally through for the redevelopment of the cinema area at Coastlands.
“We know cinema-goers are keen to see the complex reopened and we will be working hard with Coastlands management and building contractors to provide a top entertainment destination for people in the area.
“The substantial growth and development on the Kapiti Coast has reinforced our decision that Coastlands, with its refurbished shopping development and new food court, is the ideal position for a cinema complex,” said Mr Wood.
Coastlands Shoppingtown centre manager, Jan Forrest, said she was pleased work was now underway on the new cinema complex.
“Coastlands management and tenants are looking forward to the cinema complementing the shopping and entertainment experience that Coastlands offers.
“Combined with our new food court redevelopment, customers will certainly have all the elements they want from their local shopping centre,” says Jan Forrest.
