Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule is overjoyed at today’s announcement that international food producer Heinz Wattie’s is to consolidate production at their Hastings plant.

The company announced the production of sauces, beetroot and some canned products will move from plants in Victoria, Brisbane and New South Wales, to Hastings.

Mayor Yule says “this announcement comes hot on the heels of a major investment by McCains and further cements Hastings as the food production capital of Australasia".

“Our Heretaunga Plains have long been regarded as some of the most fertile soils available, arguably the best food in the world is being grown here” Mr Yule says.

“The decision by Heinz Wattie’s allows us to add significant value to the food that already comes from our land while at the same time, building the local economy and creating stable employment for the people of Hastings”.

“The decision by Heinz Watties to move production here, shows their confidence in our local economy and our ability to deliver on the world stage” says Mr Yule

Heinz operates a number of factories across Australia and New Zealand and shares production between the two countries. The decision to consolidate part of the manufacturing is a critical step to become more competitive in a challenging environment and to accelerate future growth.

The changes are expected to be implemented within twelve months.
