Red Shield Appeal call to arms

In support of the Salvation Army’s annual ‘call to arms’, Australians deployed on operations across the globe have started collecting donations for the 2011 Red Shield Appeal ahead of the traditional weekend Doorknock.

Deputy Chief of Joint Operations, Rear Admiral Ray Griggs, said that Australian sailors, soldiers, airmen and airwomen are inherently generous people who throw their full weight behind charities such as the Salvation Army.

“The generosity of ADF members reaches well beyond their wallets and cheque books,” Rear Admiral Griggs said.

“The nature of their chosen profession is one of service – it’s no surprise that ADF personnel wholeheartedly support organisations who share a similar outlook. Our people who are serving on operations are proud to be serving their nation, and to be able to support the Salvation Army.”

The ADF has been a proud supporter of the Salvation Army over the years, not least because of its strong link with the military.

Rear Admiral Griggs said the Salvation Army and, in particular, the Red Shield Appeal had a rich history entwined with Defence.

“The Red Shield badge was worn by Salvation Army volunteers who provided welfare and other care services during both World Wars. It has come to symbolise an organisation which today serves at the frontline of the battle to help those in need here at home,” Rear Admiral Griggs said.
