Pyes Pa Bypass opening celebrations

Minister of Transport Steven Joyce will officially open the Pyes Pa Bypass in Tauranga on Saturday (4 June) at 10am and the public is invited to come along and be among the first to cycle the new bypass before it opens to traffic.

The NZ Transport Agency acting state highway manager Richard Young says the 4.5 kilometre project means that road users will have a less congested, more direct route into the city from SH36 via Route K while people living on the residential section of Pyes Pa Road will have safer local road access their property.

“The new road will take about 1.2km off the trip to the Port of Tauranga via Route K and provide a big incentive for thousands of road users to avoid the slow haul through urban Pyes Pa and along Cameron Rd,” Mr Young said.

The $50 million project was built and jointly funded by the NZ Transport Agency, Tauranga City Council and Grasshopper Developments.

Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby said completion of the Pyes Pa bypass was another step towards a transport network that provides good inter-regional links and also supports the future growth of Western Bay of Plenty.

“The new bypass will add to the efficiency of our roading network and will make the local section of Pyes Pa road safer for residents.” “We’d like to invite locals to come and join in the festivities on Saturday; it’s going to be a great family fun day. Kids can decorate their bikes and be in to win prizes, there will be sausage sizzles and entertainment for the whole family,” Mr Young says.
