Students continue to support the Canterbury community

University of Canterbury students living at UC Accommodation Student Village have donated $2,500 to support the Child Caner Foundation.

“Last year UC Accommodation Student Village (UCA) residents voted to make a donation to help children with cancer”, said Nik Webb-Shephard. UCA comprises University Hall, Ilam Apartments and Sonoda Christchurch Campus which houses first year tertiary students through to PhD level. The donation drops out of UCA’s residential life program – Live, Learn, Grow.

“The ‘Grow’ aspect of the program gets students to think about those less fortunate than themselves and to make a contribution. This is another example of students showing their willingness to contribute to our community just as they did after the earthquakes both last year and this year”, said Nik Webb-Shephard.

“This year our students will take part in many volunteer events, cleaning university waterways, recycling, and an energy saving project. The ‘Live, Learn & Grow’ residential programme is offered exclusively at UCA”, said Webb-Shephard. The programme is designed to develop and support students to their full potential while they reside in UCA’s three halls.

The donation is the result of money collected from students during the year for minor misdemeanours and averages out to around $3 per resident. Each year students vote on which charity will receive the donation – this year Child Cancer and the Westpactrust Rescue Service were chosen. The money will be mostly put into the Canterbury community to support those families who have a child suffering with cancer and was gratefully received by Clare Wilkinson, Funding and Business Development Manager at the Child Cancer Foundation.
