SC’s tradespeople, retailers coming together for Quickbuild fundraiser

Tradespeople, the professions, retailers and service providers South Canterbury wide are preparing to donate their time, tools and materials for a community fundraising event in September that will benefit the Caroline Bay Aquatic Centre.

A spectacular Quickbuild event, set around activities for young and old and special events, will see a three-bedroomed house constructed; wiring and plumbing installed; walls and ceilings lined, painted and wallpapered, and furniture and décor in place – all within 36 hours.

The Quickbuild house, designed by Timaru architect John Rushton, will then be auctioned to the public with all proceeds going to the Caroline Bay Aquatic Centre.

The Quickbuild project, branded “Bang On” by its instigators, the Caroline Bay Aquatic Supporters Club, will begin on Friday, September 16, on vacant Evans Street land opposite Grants Road at the foot of the old Timaru A and P Showgrounds. Starting at 1.30pm, it will take place on the afternoon of a planned Caroline Bay special spectacular event that is being kept under wraps by the club, but one it expects will attract hundreds to the Bay including schoolchildren and the general public.

Aquatic Supporters Club chairperson Damon Odey said the spectacle to both promote the Caroline Bay Aquatic Centre and publicise the Quickbuild would have everyone on the edge of their seats and holding their breath.

“But I’m sworn to secrecy,” Mr Odey said.

Shane Bray of Henderson Building, spokesperson for the team of builders that will take their turns to bring the latest Quickbuild home through its various stages, said support from the trade sector had been very positive.

We are lucky to live in a community that supports each other in this way, Mr Bray said this week.

“Everybody working on the Quickbuild project is ecstatic with the support and time put in to date.

“Individual company support in donating materials, furnishings and décor has been outstanding,” he said.

Mr Bray said that with young children in his family, the Caroline Bay Aquatic Centre was a facility he supported strongly.

“This is something that will grow and benefit South Canterbury into the future.”

South Canterbury’s Master Builders, Certified Builders, Master Electricians, Master Painters and Master Plumbers associations, interior décor specialists and building-related supplier and service groups will be involved in the Quickbuild.

Included in the package to be auctioned will be transportation costs of the home up to the first 100kms from the build site.

Mr Odey said the Quickbuild would bring to an end a vigorous and well-supported public and business supporters campaign for the Caroline Bay Aquatic Centre that had seen more than $1.3 million raised by the Aquatic Supporters Club.

“With the sale of the Quickbuild house we are aiming to push that figure up to $1.5 million.”
