Community Unites Against Dump

The community is disputing figures provided by an American waste contractor. Ceres Environmental Llc plans to establish a demolition waste processing plant in a site adjoining residential areas.

Spokesperson George Kear said “Demolition contracts have already been awarded to this American firm at an agreed cost, so any cost savings will go straight into their pocket.”

There are health concerns that exposure to dust from concrete crushing and asbestos residues will damage the health of residents in the area.

Spokesperson David Moorhouse said “alkaline concrete dust is a proven lung irritant and can have long term health consequences. The effects of asbestos exposure are well known.”

Statements from the applicant that they were looking at other sites were dismissed as whitewash. Mr Kear stated “ We don't want this type of activity imposed on any Christchurch neighbourhood. Vulnerable groups such as school children and the elderly are at high risk”.

The community plans a public meeting next week where experts in health, land, environment and economics will provide answers to residents concerns.

Mr Moorhouse added “We rely on elected officials and the rule of law to protect our communities. The regulations that were designed to help us are now being exploited.”
