Auckland Man Takes the Plunge to Raise Money for Coastguard

Auckland man, Mike Heard (29), will attempt to break the world record for the most bungy jumps in an hour to raise funds for Coastguard this afternoon.

The fundraising effort has been organised by radio station Mai FM who broadcast the event live on air from 3pm when Mr Heard’s first jump will take place from the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

Mai FM morning host and former Auckland Warriors player, Wairangi Koopu has promised he will take the leap himself as soon as $1000 is raised for Coastguard.

Coastguard New Zealand CEO, Bruce Reid, says they are thrilled to have the support of Mai FM and to educate the younger listener base on the important role Coastguard plays in keeping Kiwis safe on the water.

“Our busiest time of the year is just around the corner and with many boaties already hitting the water in anticipation of summer, the support from Mai FM is invaluable in helping us to get safe boating messages out to the community.

“The money raised from this activity will go towards helping Coastguard maintain our day to day operations so we can continue to do our best to ensure Kiwis are kept safe on the water.”

As an incentive for listeners to make a contribution, Coastguard will draw prizes for the biggest donations. Prizes include a ‘money can’t buy’ trip for two on a Coastguard rescue vessel where volunteers will show you what it takes to save lives at sea, and two Hutchwilco lifejackets valued at $149.00 each.

Coastguard vessels are in the water around the bungy zone today, ensuring the area is kept free from other water craft and is safe for the jumps to take place.

“As with any activity around the water, safety is paramount, so Coastguard will be on site to ensure the water is clear of any foreseeable hazards,” says Mr Reid.

“Once we are satisfied the area is safe, we look forward to an exciting afternoon, hopefully witnessing history in the making.”
