13 October 2011, New Zealand – Sony Ericsson announces the launch of the new Xperia™ active, a compact rugged smartphone for people with an active lifestyle, exclusive to Telecom New Zealand, at a smart price of $399 RRP.

Just in time for summer, Xperia™ active is dust proof and water resistant* and uniquely incorporates wet finger tracking, to ensure the phone works perfectly when either the screen or a user’s fingers are wet.

Sony Ericsson has teamed up with popular surf label Billabong to deck out the Xperia™ active with stylish surfwear designs from Billabong’s 2011 range. In addition to the standard matt-black back cover, Xperia™ active comes with two extra Billabong branded back covers, in both blue and black, so you can fit out your phone for any occasion.

Xperia™ active is proof that good things come in small packages. The phone packs a 3” touch screen, Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA® Engine, a 5mp camera with HD video and the latest Android platform for smartphones (Gingerbread 2.3) all running on a powerful 1Ghz processor.

John Featherstone, Oceania Managing Director, Sony Ericsson says: “Xperia™ active is the ultimate smartphone for those on the go. Not only is it packed with all the features and applications consumers need for a worry free mobile life, it also comes with a set of accessories that make it fun and easy for them to take it everywhere, whatever their daily plans are.”

Telecom’s Chief Marketing Officer, Jason Paris notes Telecom’s XT network is the perfect match for the Xperia Active smartphone, saying “As the XT network was specifically designed to enable fast download of applications, you can check the surf, weather or fishing report; or download your favourite music track in 97% of where New Zealanders live and work. We are hearing more and more feedback from our customers with smartphones on XT that their experience is better and faster and we are confident the Xperia Active will be no exception to this.”

The phone comes pre-loaded with sports apps that enable consumers to easily track their fitness levels. Users can set their ideal training route using the built-in GPS, Barometer and Compass. On-screen heart rate and pulse can be monitored in real-time (enabled by ANT+ wireless networking technology) while the iMapMyFitness app can monitor day to day performance. Additionally, Facebook inside Xperia™ allows consumers to share their progress and experiences with friends.

The phone is also loved by three time grand slam winning tennis player Maria Sharapova, who says: “I love this smartphone because it perfectly fits both my professional and personal needs. It keeps me in touch with my friends as I travel the world on the pro tour and tracks my fitness both on and off the court.”

Extras included in the box to further build the consumer experience:

• Detachable ear hooks for the portable hands-free active headset
• Wrist strap to keep the phone close at all times
• 2GB memory card to save all your special moments
• Micro USB cable for charging and computer data transfer

*Water resistant – the phone can be kept under 1m of water for 30 mins.
