Lower Hutt emergency siren test on Thursday 3 November

The emergency sirens in Lower Hutt will sound for two minutes at 10.10am on Thursday 3 November as part of a wider emergency preparedness campaign.

Hutt City emergency management controller Paul Nickalls says this is a chance for people to know what the sirens sound like and think about whether they’re fully prepared for an emergency.

"Being prepared means knowing what to do and where to get more information," he says.

“When it’s an emergency, sirens will sound continuously and it will most likely indicate a tsunami warning or the potential for serious flooding.

If that happens, people should turn on their radios for information about what to do or go to the council’s website at www.huttcity.govt.nz.”

The test is also being publicised through an emergency text alert.

Any business, school, community or neighbourhood group can sign up to get emergency information and alerts sent to them via text message and email. More information is available at www.huttcity.govt.nz/getready
