Adopt an Ironman

Adopt an Ironman

With Ironman less than 3 weeks away, Towncentre Taupō is encouraging businesses to support the athletes who travel to our town to compete from across the world.

A few years ago Towncentre Taupō ran an ‘Adopt an Athlete’ programme where local businesses put themselves forward to be a point of contact for competitors who needed someone with local knowledge, a friendly face and someone to just touch base with once they had arrived into town.

“The ‘Adopt an Athlete’ programme was so successful in the past, we’re running it again this year,” said Traceylee Hooton, General Manager for Towncentre Taupō, “So far we’ve had over 40 athletes register and want to be adopted. The excitement shown in the emails I’ve had from competitors is pretty amazing”.

All that’s required is the willingness to be a point of contact for a competitor whilst they are here. There’s no investment neccessary, athletes just like to be able to tap into your knowledge as a local, have a friendly face supporting them in the crowd, perhaps share a meal or show them around our district.

“We adopted an athlete who had travelled from USA, with his wife and their children and were fortunate enough to be able to take them out on the lake and shared a meal,” said Chris Johnston, owner of Replete, “the joy on our athletes face when we were cheering him on as he headed off on his run was the greatest reward. We still keep in touch”.

Any business who would like to support athletes can head to www.towncentretaupo.co.nz for more information or give Traceylee a call; 07 3770104.
