Summer road works enable safer journeys

Road maintenance is vital to maintaining a safe Bay of Plenty (BOP) highways says the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA), who will be undertaking a number of road works over the next few months on our region’s major roads.

NZTA’s BOP State Highway Manager, Brett Gliddon says annual road maintenance is important for keeping the standard of our state highways safe for motorists to travel on.

He says, of the 750km of BOP state highways, around ten percent of it requires resurfacing annually. This year 95km of the region’s highways will need to be resurfaced from now until May.

Mr Gliddon says, some of the works across the Bay of Plenty includes 40km of road resurfacing work being undertaken in the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

In the Rotorua District, 30km of road resurfacing works will be carried out.

In Tauranga city, road resurfacing works will commence on SH2, just East of Cambridge Road as well as works will be undertaken on State Highway 36 and State Highway 29.

Motorists wanting to find out more about the road works or obtain detour information should go to the NZTA’s website at www.nzta.govt.nz; or freephone 0800 4HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49), says Mr Gliddon.

The state highways around the Bay of Plenty experience around 2700 million kilometres of vehicle travel yearly, a high volume of traffic, which causes the durability of the road to decrease.

He says the NZTA aims to keep traffic disruption to a minimum and thanks motorists for their patience while the road works are taking place.
