Public finding Rena debris urged to call the Pollution Hotline
Members of the public who suspect they have found debris from the stricken cargo ship Rena on the beaches of Hawke’s Bay are being urged to contact the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council’s Pollution Hotline.
There were reports of debris being washed up on Mahanga Beach last week from the Rena container ship which ran aground on the Astrolabe Reef off Mt Manganui in October.
HBRC staff surveyed the entire beach late last week and found a small amount of debris from the Rena including two silver food pouches containing soy bean and fish.
HBRC Compliance & Pollution Response Manager, Bryce Lawrence says he has been in touch with Braemar Howells, the specialist company employed to oversee the collection of Rena debris.
He says if members of the public find
any other debris on the beach which they suspect is from the
Rena they should contact HBRC’s Pollution hotline on 0800
108 838.
