Selwyn Launches Intersection Awareness Campaign

Selwyn District Road Safety is to launch an intersection campaign, “Always take another look at intersections” to tie in with the country’s new Give Way rules.

District Road Safety Adviser Ngaire Tinning says Selwyn ‘crash dummies’ Vince and Larry will feature again on billboards, in local newspapers and on posters at Council Library/Service Centres.

Selwyn drivers need to be particularly mindful of the new give way rules which come in on Sunday, 25 March, she says.

In 2011 Selwyn recorded 87 crashes at intersections across the district, and over the past five years, Selwyn has had 438 crashes, including eight fatalities, 60 serious injury and 226 with minor injuries.

“Thankfully, there were no fatalities at intersections last year, but 13 people were seriously injured and 46 received minor injuries. How well do we look and check for other traffic, and if we do see oncoming vehicles, how many of us decide to wait and how many try and beat the gap?

“Taking a little longer to really look and make the decision to proceed could prove life-saving,” she says.

Information about the new rules is available on www.giveway.govt.nz.

Call into the Council offices, including library/service centres to pick up a free fridge magnet, try the give way rule test or check out the new changes on line for yourself.
