Pedestrian Safety

Pedestrian Safety

http://www.wellington.govt.nz/search/index.php?q=pedestrian+effects+of+restoring+the+golden+mile&include_pdfs=on&submit.x=20&submit.y=11

Tomorrow the 27th of March 2012 is exactly 3 years ago since a pedestrian count was taken in the Willis /Taranaki street precinct. Short of the * New Zealand Statistics Census 2011 providing us with data on usual population counts, and in view of the growing development and recent completion of several apartment buildings in Te Aro we ask the following:

1. That the Wellington City Council conduct another independent pedestrian count in the Willis/Taranaki Street precinct.
2. That this survey is repeated every 3 years and used in all WCC projects where road safety is required to be implemented at planning according to the Land Transport Act.
3. That they undertake to conduct this survey on a Tuesday, just like you would a census.

We draw your attention to the previous pedestrian count conducted on Friday 27th of March 2009 and may not have fairly represented the afternoon pedestrian count. We are of the opinion that a well known tradition here in Wellington draws people into the pub for a pint after the long working week. This then may have had a negative impact on your pedestrian counts between 4.30pm-6.00pm and adversely effected pedestrian safety in this narrow precinct while planning to run buses through a precious pedestrian mall.

* New Zealand Statistics recorded a population explosion between 1996 and 2006 of 74.6% in Te Aro - between Cambridge Terrace and Willis Street - also known as the Willis - Taranaki Street precinct.

Yours in good faith
