Waimakariri Zone Committee meeting

MEDIA ADVISORY
4 April 2012

Waimakariri Zone Committee meeting

The Waimakariri Zone Committee will meet for its monthly meting on Thursday (5 April) in Rangiora at 1pm.

At the meeting the committee will begin with an update from the Regional Committee before receiving a presentation on diary industry initiatives for sustainable dairying from Dairy NZ.

Next the committee will look at Environment Canterbury’s project schedule (to April 2013) for achieving the Land Use and Water Quality and Biodiversity components of the Waimakariri Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP).

The project schedule has been developed from the Priority Outcomes and Recommended Actions in the ZIP and sets milestones to be achieved for the following programmes:
• Lowland Streams
• Nutrient Management and Water Use Efficiency
• Biodiversity and Braided Rivers

The committee will finish the meeting by hearing from the Department of Conservation on the roles and responsibilities for managing the Ashley / Rakahuri River.

The Waimakariri Zone Committee’s Implementation Programme (ZIP) was endorsed by councils late last year. It recommends the actions, responsibilities and time-frames for activities to help achieve the principles, targets and goals set out in the Canterbury Water Management Strategy.

The Waimakariri ZIP now forms the basis for the design and realignment of council work and planning programmes for freshwater. It was developed following numerous committee meetings and extensive stakeholder and community engagement.
