Parks Champion Honoured By Community
The Kaipatiki Local Board would like to acknowledge the contribution of local parks champion, Jim Lewis, who passed away on Sunday after a long illness.
An educator and environmentalist, Mr Lewis was a long-time Northcote resident who devoted thousands of hours to enhancing North Shore’s parks, streams and bush reserves.
Mr Lewis also made a huge contribution to education as a geography teacher; his former students include Lindsay Waugh, now Kaipatiki Local Board Chair, whom he taught at Wellington’s Onslow College in 1966.
“Jim took a hands-on role in promoting environmental protection, as well as working with Northcote College staff and students to share his knowledge and enthusiasm for ecological studies and sports,” says Ms Waugh.
“He dedicated many hours to the care of Kauri Glen bush reserve. The Kaipatiki Local Board was very privileged to fund and dedicate a park bench in his name to acknowledge his outstanding contribution to our area.
“Jim was a community treasure, and he will be missed, but he has also left a legacy that generations of Northcote residents will continue to enjoy.”
