Hutt Valley Community Law Centre to Merge with Wellington Community Law Centre

The Hutt Valley Community Law Centre is to merge with Wellington Community Law Centre from 1 July this year. Community Legal Services will continue to be provided from the existing premises at 59 Queens Drive Lower Hutt but management services will be provided from Wellington.

The merger is a response to the Ministry of Justice’s decision that in future, free community legal services, which are funded by the Ministry, must go out for competitive tender. A stronger regional grouping will better position both law centres to compete more effectively in this new competitive environment.

Community Law Centres provide free legal services to those who cannot afford to pay for a lawyer and do not qualify for legal aid.

Hutt Valley Community Law Centre Chairperson, Gerry Bealing, says that while initially the merger may cause some concern he believes that it will ultimately result in a wider variety of services being offered to the Hutt Valley community.

Wellington Community Law Centre Chairperson, Cameron Madgwick, says that his Board looks forward to working closely with the Hutt Valley community to ensure that it continues to receive appropriate and effective free legal services in the future.
