She’s back! Road Mum’s the Word!

She’s back! Road Mum’s the Word!

In an effort to prevent winter crashes, “Road Mum” is back again and still as keen as ever to get winter driving tips out to the community.

In the past five winters Selwyn District has had 404 crashes recorded, resulting in 12 fatalities, 39 people receiving a serious injury and 165 having minor injuries.

Icy roads may just be around the corner.

During winter, daylight hours are shorter, temperatures are much colder, there are increased amounts of rain, fog, ice and snow and some large trees or hedges shading some country roads. Selwyn District Road Safety Coordinator Ngaire Tinning says these conditions contribute to making our roads more testing to drive on and extra care is essential.

“A large number of the May – August crashes occurred on open roads, with the most common involving loss of control. We’re using our “Road Mum” promotion to remind people to take care on the roads,” Mrs Tinning says.

Look out for the billboards, regular information and stories in the papers, and pick up a free ice scraper and windscreen cloth. The Road Mum team will be distributing the ice scrapers to all Council Library/Service centres this week and windscreen cloths will be available in June. These are free, so there is no reason anyone in Selwyn should be driving with an icy windscreen or fogged up windows.

Remember, mother knows best, keep your windscreen clean!
