Waka
Forum
North, Whangarei
4 August 2012, 7:30pm
Met with a
standing ovation and rapturous applause upon its performance
in Europe, Waka’s initial 35 minute showing has now
evolved in a stunning 60 minute masterpiece since its return
to New Zealand and further demonstrates the incredible
choreographic work of Neil Ieremia.
Exploring the idea of
a raft as a metaphor for hope, Waka is inspired in part by
The Raft, video installation by Bill Viola, as well as a
response to The Arrival of the Maoris in New Zealand by
Louis J. Steele and Charles F. Goldie 1898, influenced by
Theodore Gericault’s famous The Raft of the Medusa
depicting the terror of a shipwreck. Don’t miss what is
set to be an incredible night of spectacular New Zealand
dance.

The Great Living Legends
Muck-In
4 August 2012
Bream Bay, Whangarei
District
The Living Legends Muck-In lives on. Living
Legends is a community conservation project that was set up
in 2011 to commemorate New Zealand’s hosting of Rugby
World Cup. Last year we planted 83,000 trees. The target is
to plant 170,000 before the end of 2015.This year, public
planting events will take place across 17 locations during
August and September. We have 45,000 trees to plant this
year so we need your help! For 2012 we have a further 2500
native trees to plant at this Northland site.
Each
planting project is dedicated to a regional ‘Rugby
Legend’ who was selected in 2011 by their provincial rugby
union. These Rugby Legends are people who have made an
outstanding contribution to rugby in New Zealand. Come along
to a Living Legends event this year and you may be lucky
enough to meet your local Rugby Legend! The Legend for the
Northland area is Richie Guy - check out our website for
more details on Richie.
Visit www.livinglegends.co.nz and
register to let us know if you are coming along to this 2012
event and we will send you further details in due
course.

Bay
of Islands P&I Show and “Savouring the Source” Food &
Wine Festival
Waimate North Showgrounds,
Kerikeri
Saturday 10 November 2012
This November will be the 170th anniversary of NZ’s first P&I Show. The Show started back in 1842 close to the site of the Waimate Mission House and is still going strong today, with many of the original pioneer families still involved as competitors, organisers or with the local community.
The Bay of Islands Pastoral & Industrial Show and Savouring the Source, a Northland food & wine festival, combine to stage a great day’s entertainment. Traditional events include equestrian, livestock, calf club, sheep and pet lambs, small animal tent, dog trials & trade displays, demonstrations, colourful food stalls, wood chopping competition and live entertainment with talent quests for adults and children. Hotly contested are all sections in the Exhibition Hall, where special guest Jack Hobbs will be a judge and later give a seminar.
In a giant marquee, Savouring the Source showcases regional food products, local wine, cafes, artisan food producers and restaurants. The day includes the finals of Kids Can Cook, a Northland Wine Association wine options competition, and cooking demonstrations from NZ Beef & Lamb’s ambassador Brenton Lowe and celebrity chef Paul Jobin.
The final event of the
day at 3:30 is the grand parade where prize winners in the
equestrian & livestock event parade with the latest in farm
machinery. A time-honoured rural spectacle!
